Implications of subtalar joint motion for muscle and joint loading during running

چکیده
Background Rearfoot pronation is one of the factors having been linked to overuse injuries in running (1). Many studies have used shoe eversion as a measure for movement about the subtalar joint axis. Others used foot movement expressed as rotations about the anatomical main axes (2). If joint coupling and with that muscle loading is to be investigated it may be beneficial to assess rotations about the anatomical axes, namely the talocrural and subtalar joints. The aim of this study was to describe how the relationship of the two ankle joint movements is affected by moderate geometric changes of the midsole of a running shoe. Secondly, the relationship of total ankle movement in main anatomical planes and the two anatomical ankle joints was to be explored.

Frontal plane moments do not accurately reflect ankle dynamics during running.
The ankle joint has typically been treated as a universal joint with moments calculated about orthogonal axes and the frontal plane moment generally used to represent the net muscle action about the subtalar joint. However, this joint acts about an oblique axis. The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between joint moments calculated about the orthogonal frontal plane axis and ...
متن کاملA functional model to describe the action of the adductor muscles at the hip in the transverse plane.
Anatomical texts agree on most muscle actions, with a notable exception being the action of the adductors of the hip in the transverse plane. Some texts list an action of the adductor brevis (AB), adductor longus (AL), and/or adductor magnus (AM) as internal rotation, whereas others list an action of external rotation. The purpose of this article is to present a functional model in support of t...
متن کاملThe effect of increasing running speed on three-dimensional changes of lower limb joint angles in open motor chain and swing phase
Objective Running is known as one of the most popular sports for which there is no time and space limit. Recently, due to lifestyle changes, the use of treadmills for walking and running has increased. However, the biomechanical differences in coordination between running on a treadmill at different speeds have not been sufficiently addressed. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect...
متن کاملEffects of footwear on three-dimensional tibiotalar and subtalar joint motion during running.
Running is a popular form of recreation, but injuries are common and may be associated with abnormal joint motion. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of three footwear conditions - barefoot (BF), an ultraflexible training shoe (FREE), and a motion control shoe (MC) - on 3D foot and ankle motion. Dynamic, biplane radiographic images were acquired from 12 runners during overg...
متن کاملEffects of lateral ligament sectioning on the stability of the ankle and subtalar joint.
Patients with subtalar joint instability are often diagnosed with ankle instability. Only after a prolonged period of time in which a patient does not improve after treatment for ankle instability is subtalar joint instability considered. To develop a clinically relevant method to diagnose subtalar joint instability, the kinematics of the simulated unstable subtalar joint were examined. A 6 deg...
